Football: Cameroon stripped of hosting 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on 30 November 2018, following a 10-hour meeting, that it was stripping Cameroon of the right to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, to be held in June and July of next year. This decision was taken due to delays in the progress of the preparations for this prestigious event. A CAF statement said that “a number of compliance conditions had not been met” and that it did not want to expose the event to “any issues that could impact on the success of the most prestigious African Competition.” CAF also stated that, due to contractual obligations, the event could not be postponed, and that a new host country would be announced “by the end of the year.” The 2019 event will be expanded from 16 to 24 participating teams. It is understood that Morocco, South Africa and Egypt are possible host countries to replace Cameroon. It is interesting to note that a similar situation arose in relation to the 2018 Africa Cup of Nations, when Morocco stepped in at the last minute to replace Kenya, who were also  deemed not to be ready to host the event!
