Sport is for all ages!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw An eighty-four-year old sprinter has become the fastest octogenarian in his age category on earth! British silver sprinter, Tony Bowman, has achieved this distinction, despite surviving two heart attacks in his seventies. Bowman, who is from Leeds, West Yorkshire, represented Team GB at the European Masters in Italy last month, gaining three medals in the 80-84 age category: gold in the hurdles; silver in the 400m relay; and bronze in the decathlon. He also came fourth and fifth in the 100m and 200m. In the hurdles, he sprinted along an 80m track, jumping two-and-a-quarter feet hurdles in only 16.8 seconds. Bowman remarked: “I am looking forward to doing this again next year when I get into the next age category, when I turn 85.” He trains every other day and keeps fit by dancing and playing hockey. He has also cut down on alcohol and chocolate. His sporting ambition is to win gold in the 100m when he is one hundred. It all goes to show that sport is for all ages – young and old!
