FIFA 21, the top selling series of football games that began its adventure in 1993, has ranked first as the highest selling boxed video game this year in the UK.
According to the most recent data, total games sold reached 43 million, which represents more than one third growth over 2019. More than half of this total of 43 million was downloaded. FIFA increased its number of sales by almost a fifth.
Both FIFA (EA) and PES (Konami), the two football giants are working for the next season to launch a better version of their games with the launch of PS5.
Interestingly, the price for FIFA was significantly higher compared to PES this year, and this has generated a huge amount of negative reviews amongst customers.
I have stumbled upon many reviews on the gaming platform ‘Steam’, criticizing EA for selling “almost the same game only with squad updates”. FIFA had a price tag of £54.99 when it launched on ‘Steam’, which was cut to around half of that during the winter sales - almost equivalent to the PES 21 initial price, without any discount.
Also, downgrading the overall rating of Aubameyang was not the wisest of moves – Arsenal fans, as customers, are trying to lift a trophy in the digital world for a difference.
My best guess is that the COVID-19 Pandemic has caused fans, who cannot support their teams near the pitch, have turned to the digital world and, as a result, FIFA 21 has scored a brilliant goal.
However, the fierce competition between the two rival companies will lead to an interesting dimension in the 2020s.
Konami initially released PES in 1995 and managed to beat FIFA with its exciting game play during the early 2000s.
The tables have turned during the 2010s, when FIFA made the game play more realistic, whilst using the advantage of having more intellectual property rights over clubs.
So, now we are heading for an exciting decade of gaming with more sophisticated technology!
