E-Sports: E-Sports and Football!

By Emre Bilginoglu, Attorney-at-Law, Istanbul, Turkey

FIFA’s director of eFootball and Gaming, Christian Volk, has explained that eFootball plays an important role for FIFA’s aspiration to make football truly global.

eFootball does help FIFA in reaching new audiences and it is easy to access.

One may think that eFootball is relatively expensive for some regions of the world but, in developing countries, eFootball can reach vast audiences through ‘Console Cafes’, where players can afford eFootball by using shared consoles with hourly fees.

Volk also stated that FIFA wants to create a competition through its member associations, which means that member associations will also take part in reaching their audiences to sustain the growth in football.

Volk further mentioned that eFootball and football are symbiotic, which is quite accurate.

Even though fans of eFootball may not attend matches or may not play football themselves, they certainly contribute to the football economy indirectly. The symbiotic relationship will evolve depending on the technological developments.

We will be watching these developments closely!
