Football: Indonesia Tragedy

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, the world governing body of association football, has stated, following the death of at least 125 people in a crush at a football match in Indonesia on 1 October 2022, that it is “a dark day for football!”

About 180 people were also injured after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch.

Infantino added:

No crowd control gas should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches.”

He also expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

This tragic incident recalls the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans in a crush at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest!

Liverpool Football Club stated:

We are deeply saddened to hear of the events at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, Indonesia and [our] thoughts are with all those affected at this time.”

Crowd control at football events remains a critical issue and the organisers of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November should be on their alert!
