Golf: Further LIV fines imposed!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Following an Arbitration Award last month (see SLT Website Post of 6 April 2023), further fines and suspensions have been imposed by the DP World Tour on players who have competed in the breakaway LIV and Asian Tour golf events without consent.

The latest cases have involved 26 players and there are more cases under consideration in the pipeline.

Those players, who have resigned from the DP World Tour, will not be reinstated until they have paid their fines, from which date their suspensions will take effect.

The DP World Tour commented as follows:

The sanctions imposed were determined on a case-by-case basis, acknowledging differences between the events in terms of the impact on the DP World Tour’s broadcast partners, sponsors and stakeholders.”

And added that the suspensions would comprise “a combination of one or two-week suspensions” and also would only apply to regular season events. This means that players would be eligible to play in major championships.

The first event in which these suspensions will take effect is the Porsche European Open, which will be held from 1-4 June, 2023.
