Despite losing their appeal to the Ad Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, sitting at the Paris Olympics, against their six points deduction (see the Post of 1 August on this website), the Canadian Women’s Football Team have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament.
The Canadian Team unsuccessfully argued that this penalty, which was imposed following a complaint lodged by the New Zealand Team in respect of drones flying over their training sessions, was too severe.
Canada beat Colombia 1-0 on Wednesday to qualify.
The Canada Soccer Association stated that they were “disappointed” with the appeal dismissal and added:
“[We] …. continue to believe that our players should not have been unnecessarily punished for actions that were not their own.”
In addition, the Association was fined £175,720 by FIFA for the incident.
