Formula 1: Mercedes Team Sale

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

It has been reported that Tito Wolff, the team principal of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, is in advanced discussions to sell around 5% of his one third shareholding in the team.

The deal values the Mercedes team at a record £4.6 billion (around €5.2 billion), with the McLaren team having been valued at £3.5 billion (around €3.9 billion) in a change of ownership structure in September 2025.

The other Mercedes team shareholders are Mercedes and the chemicals conglomerate, Ineos, each of whom also own a third of the team.

The recent increase in the value of F1 teams is credited to the increasing appeal of F1 around the world.

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, after McLaren, with three races remaining this season, and their principal driver, George Russell, has won two of the 21 grand prixs this year.

No further details of the sale are available at present.
