The Annual 2026 Open Golf Tournament takes place at Royal Birkdale, Southport, Northwest England, from 16 - 19 July 2026.
It is the oldest Golf Tournament in the World and was founded in 1860.
More than 300,000 spectators are expected at the event, and, with growing concerns over the general behaviour of fans, a new Code of Conduct, called 'The Open Commitment', has been published by the organisers, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A) of St. Andrews, Scotland.
This Code of Conduct "encourages everyone attending to play their part in protecting traditions".
Mark Darbon, the R&A Chief Executive, has stated:
"The atmosphere at The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship."
And added:
"The Open Commitment isn't about changing what makes The Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure The Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all."
In 2024, the last time The Open was held in the Northwest of England, the winner, the American professional golfer, Brian Harmon, received jeers from home fans.
Also, the winner of The Open in 2025, Scottie Scheffler, heard some fairly “choice words” when he was leading the tournament.
To avoid any further such situations, on-course signs will tell fans to respect the players, respect the links, respect each other, be aware and enjoy responsibly.
