E-Sports: AFL to enter E-Sports
By Emre Bilginoglu, Attorney-at-Law, Istanbul, Turkey
The Australian Football League (AFL) is planning to run an E-Sports tournament at the Etihad Stadium (capacity of 53,343) in Melbourne. AFL wants the member clubs to create their E-Sports’ teams to join the E-Sports’ community.
AFL's growth, digital and audiences general manager, Darren Birch, stated that “e-sports events are amazing events that sell out”. He acknowledged the fact that E-Sports’ events are like concerts with their screens, lights and displays and that appeal to young audiences.
Birch added that he sees E-Sports as a good way of expanding audiences and increasing sponsorship revenue for the League.
“All of these things make the experience bigger and bolder than your average sport” he concludes.
We agree with him and are certainly sure that E-Sports are a whole different experience.
AFL is yet another big League to join the ever-expanding E-Sports’ community worldwide.
