E-Sports: e-Sailing World Championships Launched

By Emre Bilginoglu, Attorney, Istanbul, Turkey Amid the debates on whether E-Sports should be included in the Olympics or not, yet another sport has embraced E-Sports. The world governing body for sailing, that is recognized by the IOC, has launched its virtual World Sailing Championships. To achieve this, World Sailing has partnered with a digital sailing platform called ‘Virtual Regatta’. World Sailing Regulations will be applied to the e-Sailing World Championships that will be held every year starting from 2018. The President of World Sailing, Kim Andersen, remarked that sailing is well suited to digital presentation. This move certainly heralds that other international sports governing bodies could be looking for similar initiatives. Other sports that are well suited to digital presentation may also collaborate with a digital platform for the promotion of their sports. Thanks to e-Sailing World Championships, a gamer can try out sailing, which requires a combination of equipment and nature. E-Sailing World Championships could provide a good example of how E-Sports could be included in the Olympics, to staisfy the IOC requirements (see previous GSLTR post of 4     November 2017).   Emre Bilginoglu may be contacted by e-mail at ‘This email address is being protected from spambots.
