Formula One: Schumacher Ferrari sold at auction for record sum

Michael Schumacher’s final Monaco Grand-Prix winning Ferrari, the F2001, has been sold for a sum of more than £5.5 million at auction by Sotheby’s in New York on 16 November 2017.
This is a world record for the sale of a modern F1 item.
In this car, Schumacher won his fifth and final Monaco title in 2001 and, in the same car, he won the Hungarian Grand prix in the same season, which clinched his fourth out of seven world titles. He is the most highly-decorated driver in F1 history.
Part of the proceeds of sale will be donated, by the former owner of the car, to the Michael Schumacher Keep Fighting Foundation.
It will be recalled that Schumacher, who is now forty-eight, suffered a life-threatening brain injury in a freak skiing accident, in which he hit his head on a rock, on 29 December 2013 in the French Alpes resort of Mirabel, and was in a medically induced coma for some time afterwards.
Sadly, he remains severely incapacitated, and it is reported that he may be flown from his home in Switzerland to a Brain Trauma Center in Texas in the US for a new treatment, where his family are hoping for a “miracle cure”.
