Sports Law Firms merge

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw Two well-known London Sports Law Firms have announced that they will merge their practices with effect from 22 January 2018. The Boutique Sports Law Firm, Couchmans, which was established some twenty years ago, will join forces with Charles Russell Speechlys (CRS), a law firm that traces its origins back to the middle of the Eighteenth Century, with the stated aim of offering a full-service sports law firm, which it is claimed, will set a standard for the industry. The founder of Couchmans, Nick Couchman, will become head of sports law at CRS. CRS stated that, as a result of the merger, the firm will be “uniquely placed to advise clients internationally on all the legal and strategic issues that they may encounter in the sports and related technology, media and lifestyle sectors.” Couchman commented on the merger as follows: “Both firms are immersed in this sector and have a track record of innovation and working on ground breaking projects …… This exciting new step in our development allows us to meet the needs of our clients who want sector specialist advice across the full range of legal disciplines with a global outlook.” Darren Bailey, the former director of football governance and regulation at the English Football Association, becomes a Consultant to the new firm.
