Tennis: Federer signs record clothing sponsorship deal!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw Roger Federer, the ATP world number two men’s singles tennis player, who is currently defending his 2017 Wimbledon title, has signed what is believed to be a record clothing sponsorship deal with the Japanese clothing company, UNIQLO, which is worth US$ 300 million over 10 years. He has not renewed his deal with NIKE, which he signed in 1994 and which expired in March 2018. NIKE was, however, given the option of matching the UNIQLO offer but declined to do so. A spokesperson for NIKE told the media: “…… we are thankful and proud to have been part of Roger’s incredible journey and wish him the best in the future.” As UNIQLO do not make tennis shoes, Federer is expected to continue wearing his NIKE trainers. NIKE also retains ownership of Federer’s monogrammed RF line and he would like to get back the RF logo. It is reported that the Japanese deal is worth more than double Federer’s on-court earnings of around US$ 116 million and almost three times the value of his former NIKE sponsorship contract. Nice money, if you can get it! Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw may be contacted by e-mail at ‘This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
