E-Sports: Some Recent Developments

By Emre Bilginoglu, Attorney-at-Law, Istanbul, Turkey Here are some great updates on E-Sports, thanks, amongst others, to Staffordshire University and the University of Roehampton in the United Kingdom. Staffordshire University now offers a brand-new degree course: Esports - BA (Hons). The course focuses on the business side of E-Sports. Academics coming from marketing, games design, interactive media technology, event management and e-sports practitioners will give lectures to the students. The University of Roehampton has launched a scholarship for talented e-sports players. Ten students, who demonstrate their talents, will be granted a scholarship, on the condition that they display their commitment over the years to their under-graduate or post-graduate courses. The Turkish University Bahcesehir has also launched an E-Sports scholarship. The University has also gone on to become a name sponsor for the League of Legends team, Supermassive. In other news: the Turkish E-Sports Federation and Riot Games have signed a collaboration agreement and opened an E-Sports Stadium in Istanbul, at which the Chair of the Turkish Parliament, Binali Yildirim, attended. The inception and the development of E-Sports courses and scholarships demonstrate the importance shown in this field. The outcome of academia’s role in this exciting area of sport will be understood much better as time goes on!   Emre Bilginoglu, who is also admitted to practise law in the State of New York, USA, may be contacted by e-mail at ‘This email address is being protected from spambots.
