Football: English Premier League January Transfer Window Spending Down!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw Spending on new players by English Premier League Clubs in the January Transfer Window, which expired on 31 January 2019, was significantly down on previous years. Shock figures from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group reveal that the spending this time round of £180 million was down by 42% compared with the January Transfer Window of 2018. This is the first time that spending is down since 2012. The transfer at the price of £55 million from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea of Christian Pulisic accounted for a third of the total spending. The biggest transfer window deadline deals involved Miguel Almiron to Newcastle for £21 million and Jonny Otto to Wolves for £15 million. In the opposite direction: there were several major sales of players by English Premier League Clubs. For example, Brahim Diaz moved to Real Madrid from Manchester City at the sum of £15.5 million. A sign, perhaps, of the present economic times and the effect of the looming Brexit? Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw may be contacted by e-mail at ‘This email address is being protected from spambots.
