EURO 2020: Montenegro on Racist Charge!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw The Governing Body of European Football, UEFA, has charged Montenegro with racist behaviour following their EURO 2020 qualifying match with England in Podgorica on 25 March 2019. The match was overshadowed by racist chants from some home fans aimed at several England black players, including Danny Rose. As a result, UEFA has announced that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Montenegro, who are charged with “racist behaviour”. The case will be heard on 16 May 2019. If proved, Montenegro could face fines and a partial stadium closure. However, there have been calls in several quarters for stronger penalties including expulsion from competitions in which racist behaviour occurs, which England manager, Gareth Southgate, described as “unacceptable!” Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, described the racist chanting as “despicable” and also “completely unacceptable in any sport!” Whilst Raheem Sterling has said that “it’s time for the people in charge to put a real stamp on it!” So, UEFA, the onus is on you to take a stand and make a real difference!
