Tokyo Olympics: Postponement?

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw With the growing pressure from National Olympic Committees, including those of Canada and Australia, to postpone the 2020 Summer Games, which are due to be held in Tokyo in July and August, and a call now from the President of the World Athletics, Lord Sebastien Coe, to do so, the IOC is likely to bow to what seems to be the inevitable, due to the continuing corona virus global pandemic. For the benefit of all stakeholders in the world’s greatest sporting event, not least the athletes themselves, it is clear that, to end the present uncertainty, a decision needs to be taken without any further delay, rather than waiting a month to do so, according to the latest announcement by the IOC and the Japanese Government. If the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games are, in fact, postponed until next year, this will be the first time in the 124 years of the Modern Era of the Olympics, which were resumed in 1896. Under the present circumstances, this would be a sensible and practicable decision, although, of course, a very sad one and another blow for sport!
