Olympics: Tokyo 2020 Summer Games latest news!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw It has been announced by the President of the IOC, Dr Thomas Bach, that the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, which have been postponed for a year, will be cancelled, if it is not safe for them to take place in 2021. Safety being the primary concern of the IOC and the organisers of the Games. The IOC President stated that: “You cannot for ever employ 3,000 to 5,000 people in an organising committee…[and] you cannot have the athletes being in uncertainty.” And added that the task of reorganising the Games was “a mammoth” one and  there was “no blue print” for it and that the event would “definitely be different” concentrating on “the essentials.” Furthermore, if social distancing rules were still in place in Japan next summer, he did not favour holding the Games behind closed doors, as that was not within the spirit of the Games. The IOC has set aside $US800 million towards the financial impact of the postponement of the Games. Whilst the total additional costs for Japan have been estimated at between two and six billion US dollars! Bach added: “When we have a clear view how the world will look on 23 July 2021, then we will take the appropriate decisions.” What a terrible and unprecedented situation for the IOC, the organisers, the athletes, as well as the fans of the Games!
