Euro 2020: England Denmark Semi-Final Controversy

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The penalty, which was awarded to England in extra time in the Semi-Final with Denmark on 7 July 2021, was not only controversial at the time on the pitch, but also subsequently off the pitch.

It transpires that a laser pointer was directed at the Danish goalkeeper’s face just before the penalty was taken and UEFA, the Governing Body of European Football, has charged England in connection with this incident.

The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control Ethics and Disciplinary Body, in due course.

The Danish goalkeeper saved the spot-kick, but Harry Kane, the England Captain, scored the deciding goal on the rebound to take England into the Euro 2020 Final with Italy on 11 July 2021 making history after 55 years.

Once again, football never fails to surprise its followers!
