Following the announcement of a new state of emergency declared in Tokyo, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the postponed 2020 Olympic Games, which are scheduled to take place between 23 July and 8 August 2021, will be held without spectators.
With around only 15% of the Japanese population having been vaccinated, this is the latest blow to hit the Games. There is considerable opposition amongst the Japanese to the holding of the Games at the present time, and medical authorities in Japan are also calling for the Games to be postponed or cancelled.
All participants in the Games will be subject to strict ‘Protocols’ to limit the spread of the virus and also to keep all involved in them as safe as possible.
The President of the Organising Committee, Seiko Hashimoto, announcing this decision, stated:
“This is a sorry message that we have to announce, but this was the only choice available to take.”
These will be strange Olympics, indeed, reflecting the strange and unprecedented times in which we are living!
