Polo: Women’s First World Cup!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The first ever women’s Polo World Cup is being hosted in Argentine, the mecca of this elitist and previously male-dominated sport.

Teams are competing from the host country, the US, Brazil, England and Italy.

The event is being held in Buenos Aires and is the culmination of the growing opportunity for women participating in what is believed to be the world’s oldest team sport.

Polo was introduced in Argentina by British immigrants in the early 1800s and Argentina is now one of the top countries in which the sport is played.

Argentina is also a major exporter of polo ponies specially bred for the sport.

Delfin Uranga, the President of the Argentine Polo Association, commented as follows:

Giving this opportunity for women to compete at the same level that men currently compete in, has a global impact and is also a message for the world.”

This is yet another example of women’s equality in elite sport and long may this trend continue!
