Usain Bolt Trademark Application

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

It has been reported that the fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt, the retired Jamaican sprinter and eight-times Olympic gold medalist, has applied, on 17 August 2022, to the US Patent and Trademark Office to register a logo of his celebration victory pose as a trademark.
He is known globally for this gesture, in which he leans back and points to the sky.
The logo depicts the black silhouette of a man in a distinctive pose, with one arm bent and pointing to the head, and the other arm raised and pointing upwards.
He intends to use this logo on clothing, jewellery and shoes and also in relation to sports bars and restaurants.
If successful, as seems likely to be the case, Bolt can use the trademark registration himself and/or license others to do so in relation to the above-mentioned goods and services.
The registration process in the US, generally, takes 8-10 months from start to finish.
