Football: Pele Dies

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The Brazilian football legend, Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento), has died, at the age of 82.

He was regarded as the greatest football player ever, achieving global fame at the age of 17.

He was the only player to win the FIFA World Cup three times, in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

During his 21-year footballing career, he scored a world record of 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances, including 77 goals in 92 matches played for his country.

In 2000, he was named as the ‘FIFA Player of the Century’.

The President of Brazil has declared three days of national mourning in his honour.

The Brazilian Football Confederation stated:

Our King of football gave us a new Brazil and we are thankful for his legacy.”

What more can one say?!
