Olympic Games: New Sports for Los Angeles 2028

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the inclusion of the following new sports in the Los Angeles Olympic Games to be held in 2028 (LA28):

  • Cricket (in its T20 format)
  • Flag football
  • Baseball-Softball
  • Lacrosse
  • Squash

Cricket has not been an Olympic sport since 1900 and returns to the Olympic Programme in 2028.

There will not be any space in LA28 for the inclusion of breakdance, which makes its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Boxing, however, has been confirmed for LA28, although the sport is currently without a governing body which is recognised by the IOC.

The President of the IOC, Dr Thomas Bach, commented:

These [new] sports will make the Olympic Games LA28 unique.”

And added:

Their inclusion will allow the Olympic Movement to engage with new athlete and fan communities in the US and globally.”
