FOOTBALL: THE CAS AD HOC DIVISION REGISTERS AN APPEAL FROM THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE AND CANADA SOCCER
WRESTLING: THE FRENCH WRESTLER TATIANA DEBIEN (53KG) REQUESTS AN ADDITIONAL QUOTA PLACE FOR FRANCE
Paris, 29 July 2024 - The Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered the following new procedures:
CAS OG 24/09 Canadian Olympic Committee & Canada Soccer v. Federation Internationale de Football Association & New Zealand Football & New Zealand Olympic Committee Inc. & Fédération Française de Football & Comité National Olympique et Sportif Français & Federación Colombiana de Fútbol & Comité Olímpico Colombiano
The application was filed by the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer (the Applicants) in relation to the six-point deduction imposed on the Canadian women’s soccer team for the football tournament at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The six-point deduction, as well as one-year suspensions from taking part in any football-related activity for officials Beverly Priestman, Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander, were imposed by the FIFA Appeal Committee in its decision of 27 July 2024 after it established that breaches of the FIFA regulations applicable to the Olympic football tournament concerning the prohibition on flying drones over training sites had occurred.
The Applicants seek a decision from the CAS ad hoc Division either cancelling or reducing the points deduction. The Applicants do not request relief with respect to the one-year suspensions imposed on the officials. The Panel of arbitrators is being constituted. A hearing with the parties is likely to take place on 30 July 2024 and the final decision should be issued at around midday on 31 July 2024.
TAS OG 24/10 Tatiana Debien c. United World Wrestling & Comité International Olympique
French wrestler Tatiana Debien (the Applicant) has filed an application against the decision issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 27 July 2024 (the Challenged Decision) in which her request for an additional quota place for France in 53kg women's wrestling was rejected. The Applicant contests the regularity of the qualifying phase of the wrestling competition for the Olympic Games Paris 2024, alleging its non-compliance with the Olympic Charter. Tatiana Debien seeks a ruling from CAS annulling the Challenged Decision and ordering the allocation of an additional quota for women's wrestling 53kg in favour of France.
The Panel of arbitrators will be constituted shortly and will issue procedural directions with respect to the case.
No hearing date has been fixed yet.
