Motor Racing: Vintage Grand Prix Car Sale

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

A rare ‘Silver Arrow’1954 Mercedes-Benz racing car has been sold by auction in Stuttgart, Germany, on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, for the sum of €46.5million.

The winning bid was made by an unnamed telephone bidder.

The car is one of four known complete examples of the vehicle and was driven by two famous racing drivers, namely, Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.

In 2022, Mercedes-Benz sold by auction one of only two examples of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe for a record sum of €135 million to date. This 1955 car was named after the engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut.

It would be very interesting to know who bought the 1954 vintage racing car and for what reasons!
