It has been announced that the English Premier League will have two transfer windows this summer to allow Manchester City FC and Chelsea FC to sign players before the FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place in the United States from 15 June – 13 July. The tournament involves 32 teams and follows the format of the normal FIFA World Cup.
The window will open between 1 June and 10 June and will then close for five days before reopenning from 16 June until 1 September.
Chelsea and Manchester City are the English Premier League teams in the tournament.
As the English Premier League can only have a summer window of 12 weeks - hence the need for the break to allow it to run until 1 September, in line with the closing of the summer transfer window in the other big European Leagues.
FIFA has approved these arrangements and has allowed new players to be registered for the tournament from 1-10 June, and also from 27 June-3 July, for the knockout stage.
The rationale behind these arrangements is to bring some order to the global football transfer system.
Interestingly, FIFA has also allowed clubs to sign players solely for the duration of the tournament.
