First Chairman of the English Football Regulator Board Named
By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw
It has been reported that David Kogan has been named as the first chair of the new Independent Regulator of English football.
Kogan, who is a sports media executive, will serve a five-year term and be paid a salary of £130,000 (around €149,619) for a three-day week.
He will be joined on the Board by Dame Helen Stephenson, Non-Executive Director and former CEO of the England and Wales Charity Commission, and Simon Levine, a Sports Lawyer and former International Managing Partner of the Law Firm DLA Piper.
Kogan remarked on his appointment, following an independent scrutiny of his previous donations to the governing UK Labour Party:
"There are urgent and critical issues that need addressing in football, and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve the right solutions for a more sustainable industry."
One of Kogan's biggest priorities will probably be the case of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, following calls for the owner, Dejphon Chansiri, the Thai businessman, to sell the cash-strapped Club.
Last week it was disclosed that the wages of players and staff were again not paid on time for the fifth time in seven months.
In fact, the Football Regulator can remove an owner of a football club who is threatening its future.
