Sheffield Wenesday Administration Filing

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Not surprisingly, it has been reported that Sheffield Wednesday FC, founded in 1867 and currently playing in the Championship, the second tier of the English Football League (EFL), have filed for administration at the Insolvency and Companies Court, on 24 October 2025, after the English Tax Authority, His Majesty's Revenue & Customs, were set to issue a winding-up petition against the club.

Three administrators have been appointed; the club staff have been briefed; and a meeting with the players has been held.

The club is now facing a 12-points deduction, and, currently, they are at the bottom of the Championship.

Going into administration will end the decade-long ownership of the Thai businessman, Dejphon Chansiri, of the club.

It is understood that there are interested buyers of the club, with whom the administrators are in discussions, and they are also inviting formal offers from other potential buyers.

One of the administrators, Kris Wigfield, has remarked:

"The joint administrators have taken over the running of the club with immediate effect to protect the interests of creditors, and to ensure Sheffield Wednesday can continue operating while we seek a new owner as swiftly as possible.”

And added:

"Like many football clubs, it has been trading at a significant loss for many years, with those losses historically funded by the owner. Mr Chansiri is no longer willing to provide that financial support.”

One of the other administrators, Paul Stanley, has commented:

"There should be no interruption to the fixture schedule, and we are in close contact with the EFL to ensure the effects of this administration on the employees, supporters, the community and the players are minimised as far as possible.”

And added:

"With the right ownership structure, we are confident the club has a bright future and will meet all EFL regulatory obligations."

Let us hope that this is so!
