Football: Lionel Messi Milestone

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Lionel Messi has reached a milestone in his glittering football career by becoming only the second player in history to reach 900 top-level career goals. The other player to achieve this feat is Cristiano Ronaldo in 2024.

He achieved this on 18 March 2026 when he scored this landmark goal in the Inter Miami match against Nashville SC at Geodis Park in Tennessee, US, in the Concacaf Champions Cup last-16 second leg tie.

Messi, who is 38 years old, has scored 81 times in 92 appearances since signing for Inter Miami in June 2023 and helping the club to win the League and MLS Cups.

He is considered to be one of the greatest footballers of all time, having also scored goals for Barcelona, Paris St‑Germain and Argentina during his career.

He is also an eight times winner of the prestigious Ballon d'Or, whilst Ronaldo has won this coveted award 13 times!
