Football: Another Incident of Racism!
By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw
At the Tyne-Wear derby, on 22 March 2026, between Newcastle FC and Sunderland FC, the English Premier League (EPL) match was paused for three minutes, in accordance with the EPL Protocol, following a report of racism towards the Sunderland defender, Lutsharel Geertruida, who is black and on a season-loan from RB Leipzig.
The EPL stated that the incident will be fully investigated, and the incident has been reported to the Northumbria Police.
Newcastle stated that:
"We are aware of a report of racism made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during our Premier League match against Sunderland. Our stance is clear - we do not tolerate discrimination of any form.”
And added that:
"We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable.”
Sunderland stated that:
Racism is completely unacceptable. It is abhorrent and has no place in our game or in society.”
And added that:
"Football must be a safe and inclusive environment for everyone - without exception - and we will continue to work with the relevant authorities to support that aim."
We would entirely agree with all of these remarks!
