Football: The Scottish Football Association withdraws support for Infantino

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

It has now been reported that the Scottish Football Association (SFA) has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino and will not be voting for his re-election as President of FIFA, early next year.

Ian Maxwell, the CEO of the SFA, stated as follows:

The position of the SFA has been clear since the 55 UEFA associations met …. [and] …. [w]e have aligned ourselves with the UEFA position and 55 nations are stronger than one voice.”

And he further elaborated as follows:

"Their statement since then has talked about a lack of confidence in the FIFA leadership and the Scottish FA agree completely with that decision. The SFA will not be voting for Gianni Infantino come the re-election in early 2027."

The SFA statement of no confidence in Infantino follows the report that FairSquare, a non-profit organisation which campaigns for accountability in sport, has written to the FIFA governance, audit and compliance committee, requesting that Infantino be ruled ineligible to run again for the FIFA Presidency.
