Top twenty footbal club earners for 2013-2014 season break new world records!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw Once again, football is maintaining its position as the world’s most lucrative sport, according to the latest earnings of major football clubs reported by Deloitte’s in their l8th Annual Football Money League Report for the 2013-2014 season, which was published on 22 January, 2015! The combined earnings from the world’s top twenty football clubs exceeded €6 billion, largely due to higher earnings from the sale of their broadcast rights. Revenues from commercial activities, such as sponsorship and merchandising deals, have also contributed significantly to this increase. In top position, not surprisingly, for the tenth year in a row, is Real Madrid with revenues of €549.5 million; followed by Manchester United with revenues of €518 million (up from 4th place in the 2012-2013 season). Entering the top twenty revenue football club rankings for the first time are Napoli (in 16th place) with revenues of €164.8 million; Newcastle United (in 19th place) with revenues of €155.1 million; and Everton (in 20th place) with revenues of €144.1 million! Eight English Premier League Clubs figure in the latest top twenty list; and all twenty Premier League Clubs figure in the top forty list. This shows how popular this League is around the world. According to Dan Jones, partner in the Deloitte’s Sport Business Group: “Commercial and broadcast revenues are now more important than ever to clubs to enable them to compete financially and put the best talent on the pitch!” In the 2014-2015 season, it is expected that as many as five clubs could achieve revenues of more than €500 million! It seems that top flight football is a licence to print money!   Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw is an International Sports Lawyer, Academic and Author and may be contacted by e-mail at ‘This email address is being protected from spambots.
