International Sports Law Conference

Faculty of Health & Sports 28-29 March 2017 University of Gibraltar, Europa Point Campus, Gibraltar   Sport holds an incredibly pervasive presence in our societies, and this has led to the need to consider the legal framework underpinning better regulated, more equitable reforms in this area. These are of vital concern given increasingly negative sports-related media reports associated with aspects such as match-fixing, doping and inadequate governance. The University of Gibraltar is pleased to be bringing together leading academics and sports law professionals for an international conference that will be held at the University’s iconic location at the southernmost tip of the Rock, overlooking the world-famous Straits that bears its name. This two-day conference will be of interest to a cross-section of sport’s diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, sponsors, media, career professionals, clubs and federations, sporting bodies, agents, academics and indeed any professional industry involved in this growing and dynamic area of sports legal practice and marketing. The speakers’ contributions are aimed at highlighting the legal context in which the many issues currently confronting sport’s many stakeholders should be considered, so as to aspire to a Lex Sportiva that acts in the best interests of all its stakeholders. The conference will examine financial fair play rules; the role of the Swiss Federal Supreme Court in settling sports disputes; Sports and Politics: UEFA and FIFA Cases; and the Court of Arbitration for Sport; etc. The Conference will be addressed by several leading  internationally renowned speakers from Gibraltar and Europe, including Michael Llamas, QC, Gibraltar Attorney General and President of the Gibraltar Football Association, and  Professor Ian Blackshaw  International Sports Lawyer.
