The Olympics: Study on Good Governance Published
A Study on Good Governance, which was commissioned by the IOC from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), a leading Business School based in Lausanne, Switzerland, has just been published and makes very interesting reading.
The Study makes 22 recommendations for improving structures and processes for governance in the IOC in the immediate term; and 11 recommendations for the longer term.
The IMD has also identified 7 so-called 'dilemmas' which the IOC needs to address in the next 10 years.
The IMD recommendations are divided into three sections as follows:
- 'Ethical Conduct and Reputation';
- 'Organisational supervision and decision-making'; and
- 'The IOC as a leader in the Olympic Movement'.
The latter section includes a recommendation that the IOC be more directly involved in organising the Games, which the IMD believes would "ensure that the Olympic Games delivery meets legacy objectives and matches other strategic priorities of Olympic Agenda 2020."
On the Ethical side, The IMD recommends giving the IOC Ethics Commission more independence to investigate cases of ethical misconduct with the appointment of an independent secretary. Furthermore, the IOC Executive Board should consider delegating its sanctioning powers to an independent third party.
This Study is to be welcomed as another step in the continuing fight against corruption in sport and it is to be hoped that the IOC will give a lead by implementing its recommendations in a proper and timely manner.
