Manipulation in Sport: New Handbook Published

The ‘Palgrave Handbook on the Economics of Manipulation in Sport’ has just been published as an e-Book and to be followed in a Hardback version in two weeks’ time.
The Book is a collection of essays by several international academics and sports lawyers and is edited by Markus Breuer of the School of Business of Heidelberg University, Germany, and David Forrest of the Centre for Sports Business, Liverpool University, UK.
The topics covered in this important Book are wide-ranging and include the different types of manipulation in sport; match-fixing for betting or sporting gain; financial doping; sports organisations governance; corruption in bidding for mega sports events; international perspectives; and the role of CAS in countering the manipulation of sport.
As the Editors point out in their Introduction to the Book:
“Sport has enjoyed steadily increasing prominence and economic importance since the Millennium. But threats to its integrity appear to have grown in parallel …. Threats to the spirit of sport come from internal, external and even state actors, who seek either to manipulate events on the field or to exploit the institutions of sport for their own ends…. [and]….the reputation of sport becomes more tarnished as a result….”
The Book also addresses the important issue of what is to be done about the manipulation of sport through economic reasoning.
The publication of this Book is very timely, coming as it does in the wake of the controversial claims of systemised state doping by Russia in connection with the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games; recent ball tampering in test cricket; and the increasing use of so-called ‘mechanical doping’ in cycling.
