INDIA: ICC tries to ensure India does not impose tax on the income from Champions Trophy

It has been reported that the International Credit Council (hereinafter ICC) has asked India to immediately settle the tax exemption issue for the 2006 Champions Trophy. According to the ICC chairman ICC cannot afford to shell out 40 to 50 percent tax for major tax tournaments. If the issue is not settled soon, the 2006 Champions Trophy might be relocated elsewhere (in the press Pakistan was mentioned as an alternative). It has been reported that the ICC is still facing tax-related matters of the 1996 World Cup that was organised in India. This issue was apparently also the reason why the last edition of the Champions Trophy was not held in India.
