E-Sports: Some Recent Highlights

By Emre Bilginoglu, Attorney-at-Law, Istanbul, Turkey The threat of match-fixing remains: E-Sports Integrity Coalition (ESIC) Integrity Commissioner, Ian Smith, stated recently that illegal betting in E-Sports has reached $2bn. Prize pools in tournaments can reach millions of dollars and betting provides an incredible chance to make some easy and illegal money with the potential help of a player. Although burdensome, detecting match-fixing is not entirely impossible. The World’s biggest E-Sports company, ESL, collaborates with ESIC and other organisations to find potential threats to the integrity of the game. It should be up to the organisers to do whatever may be possible if match-fixing is to be tackled. Developers could also build mechanisms that provide all relevant statistics during the game to facilitate fraud detection. Wolfteam: Wolfteam has proven to gain more players recently. Developed by Softynx, based in Seoul,  South Korea, the First Person Shooter (FPS) Wolfteam has over 30 million players in Turkey alone. Fenerbahce Espor, one of the leading E-Sports clubs in Turkey has become the latest champion and the cup was presented by the first President of the newly-formed Turkish E-Sports Federation, Alper Ozdemir. Another E-Sports Arena: Turkey is planning to launch its first E-Sports arena in 2019, Riot Espor Arena, which will potentially host more than a thousand spectators. The head of Riot Games Turkey, Bora Kocyigit, stated that the investments of the company in the country will continue.   Emre Bilginoglu, who is admitted to practise Law in the State of New York, USA and in Turkey, may be contacted by e-mail at ‘This email address is being protected from spambots.
