Cricket: Ben Stokes to face ECB disciplinary proceedings

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw Ben Stokes, the all-rounder England cricketer, is due to face an England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Discipline Commission on 5 December 2018 after being cleared of affray at Bristol Crown Court on 14 August 2018. For the background to this case, see my post of 17 August 2018 on the GSLTR website. The hearing is expected to last two days and he is likely to face a charge of bringing the game into disrepute. If found guilty, he could face a lengthy ban, as the charge is considered by the ECB to be a serious one, undermining the integrity and reputation of the genteel game of cricket. The delay in bringing these proceedings is due to the complexity of the case; the availability of a suitable Panel to hear it; and timing considerations to fit in with the end of the cricket season. Stokes already missed last year’s Ashes Tour in Australia whilst the case was being investigated. This is a high-profile case, whose outcome will be watched with great interest!
